The Student Success Center (SSC) staff is committed to helping UT students take charge of their success. Our staff promotes undergraduate student excellence and persistence to graduation through tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, and student support programs. The center and website are a resource and guide to the university’s other excellent curricular and co-curricular resources. Our goal is to challenge students to create educational plans that position them to thrive at our university and beyond.

We are located in Greve Hall on the third floor. This location is the primary spot for students to receive assistance from SSC core programs. In addition, SSC also provides additional tutoring locations at Hodges Library and South Carrick Residence Hall.

SSC originated in 2005 to provide students with academic support and assistance in managing the transition to UT. SSC began as a virtual website linking campus-wide resources and became an official unit with a physical space in summer 2006. Since that time, SSC has grown to include an array of academic support resources made available to all undergraduate UT students.

The SSC recently received national recognition, winning third place in the NCLCA – LSCHE website excellence competition. Criteria for the award comes from the Council for the Achievement of Standards in Higher Education and from the W3C guidelines for accessibility. The Student Success Center strives to provide academic success resources for UT students through an easy-to-utilize and engaging website and wishes to thank the staff at UT’s Office of Creative Communications for their support in achieving this goal. SSC Staff, Dr. Anton Reece and Jessica Osborne, will attend the NCLCA October conference to accept the award.

Summer Opportunity for Academically Dismissed Students. 2015 NACADA Regional Conference, Covington KY. Doug Renalds.

What happens when students academically dismissed at the end of spring term are allowed reinstatement for summer term?  Inspired by The University of North Carolina-Asheville’s 2013 NACADA Region 3 presentation and its Academic Recovery Program (ARP), this past summer the University of Tennessee piloted Summer Opportunity for Academic Recovery (SOAR).  In this presentation, we will explore planning, implementation, and assessment stages for SOAR, a program that provided a portion of the academically dismissed students an opportunity to compete again and continue enrollment.

When Outreach and Assessment Meet: Using Assessment to Shape your Outreach. IUPUI 2015 National Assessment Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana. Jessica D. Osborne.

This presentation included an overview of the Student Success Center Comprehensive Assessment Report and an overview of the SSC outreach and marketing plan. The SSC Comprehensive Assessment Report is an annual document that provides information on SSC utilization, reach, and overall effectiveness. This document is used to describe important stories that originate from the Student Success Center. Details and information from this document are also utilized to create a strategic plan for outreach and marketing that includes targeted campus advertising, web and social media presence, on-campus events, and campus partnerships.

Using our office’s most recent Student Success Center Annual Report as an example, we described the challenging task of measuring a program’s student impact, recapped the impact measurements within our annual report, and facilitated group discussion of the audience’s best practices in accessing impact. Through handouts and a brief PowerPoint presentation, we gave special attention to the four metrics used as guiding principles for demonstrating impact, and summarized impact across a variety of programs, including academic coaching, Supplemental Instruction, tutoring, recovery workshops, and a support program for underrepresented students.
