As the day winds down across the University of Tennessee campus and offices close their doors, a new initiative, Student Success Express, is just beginning. Designed to provide students with a convenient after-hours option for support and resources, this program marks an exciting step toward enhancing student success beyond traditional office hours.
It’s here where staff and departments across the Division of Student Success (DSS) come together to offer support, answer questions, and provide resources to help UT student scholars thrive.
“Here at UT, we believe in creating accessible spaces that empower our scholars to explore their potential and tackle any challenges that come their way,” said CJ Sandidge, Associate Vice Provost for Student Success.
From academic advising to career services, students can access a wide range of resources designed to guide them toward success, creating a dynamic space that remains open and active well into the evening.
Beginning in September, DSS introduced this extended hours initiative to connect students with academic and career support outside of what are considered normal business hours.
Offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5-8 p.m. on Hodges Library Ground Floor, Student Success Express features representatives from DSS as well as the Center for Career Development (CCDAE), Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowship (OURF), the Academic Success Center (ASC), and Academic Advising.
While there, students can meet informally with a DSS staff member to discuss academics, campus life, or other support-related topics, schedule follow-up appointments for tailored guidance and resources, or engage in a variety of workshops that are offered each month, covering key topics to enhance student success.
“Whether stopping by for a conversation or booking an appointment for focused support, we are committed to being present and responsive to the needs of our scholars,” Sandidge said.
Student Success Express also serves as a way for students to connect with campus leadership. On the first Tuesday of each month, Dr. Amber Williams, Vice Provost of Student Success, hosts “Beyond the Classroom”, a relaxed and engaging opportunity for student scholars to connect with the Vice Provost, share their aspirations, and explore strategies for achieving their goals.
Dr. Williams and other campus leaders have been excited to witness the impact Student Success Express has made on campus. Doug Porter, Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives, has seen first-hand how more availability hours can make students’ access to resources and guidance much easier.
“For students, having access to something like Student Success Express has been a fantastic initiative,” said Porter. “You can see how the after hours, one-on-one support has helped them navigate their academic and career goals with clarity and given students the tools to tackle challenges head-on.”
Student Success Express concluded operations for fall 2024 on Dec. 5, and will return on Dec. 19 and 20, as well as Jan. 2 and 3, for a special holiday edition to support students during the winter break.
Student Success Express will resume normal operations during the spring 2025 semester, beginning Feb. 4.
