University Exploratory Advising
If you’re still deciding on a major, or you’re considering options across multiple colleges, University Exploratory Advising is built for you. You’ll be paired with an Academic & Career Exploration (ACE) Coach who helps you explore majors, plan your courses, and use Vol Core (general education) to make progress while you decide. Most University Exploratory students declare a major by 45 attempted credit hours.

How the University Exploratory program works
The University Exploratory program is housed within the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration. Students in the program are advised by ACE Coaches who provide integrated academic and career planning support. You’ll meet with your coach every semester to explore options, plan your courses, and stay on track. Students explore major options while making progress toward graduation through Vol Core (general education) coursework. Transfer students with more than 24 transferable hours must be admitted directly into a college.
What the program includes
Your ACE Coach guides you through six interconnected supports designed for students still figuring out their major.
Academic and Career Exploration (ACE) Coach
ACE Coaches are cross-trained in academic advising and career exploration and serve as advisors for students in the University Exploratory program. Students meet with their coach every semester to engage in self-exploration and plan courses.
Major and career exploration class (COUN ED 205)
COUN ED 205 is a one-credit course offered by the ACE Team. The course includes career assessments, access to all the academic colleges, major and career research, and decision-making strategies.
Specialized First Year Studies class (FYS 101)
Students in the University Exploratory program will be enrolled in an FYS 101 course specifically designed for deciding students. The course is taught by the CCDAE Team and infuses exploration strategies.
Career programs (Vol-to-Vol and ACE VolTreks)
The Vol-to-Vol: Majors Fair is a networking event that takes place in the fall semester and provides exploring students access to representatives from all colleges. ACE VolTreks are held during spring semester to offer major and career exploration opportunities on-campus.
Career assessments and exploration resources
Students in the University Exploratory program have access to tools to help them identify interests, strengths, and values, including career assessments.
Tailored multi-step orientation process

- Your DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) report
- A list of courses you’re considering or have completed
- Questions you want to discuss with your ACE Coach (major options to explore, courses to plan, Vol Core progress, career assessment results from COUN ED 205)

Exploratory advising appointments
You’ll schedule advising through an email campaign. Email your ACE Coach directly to schedule an appointment anytime.
Changing or declaring a major
Students who are eligible for their major of choice and ready to declare should schedule an academic advising appointment in the appropriate college advising center. ACE Coaches cannot change students’ majors.
Parallel planning
If you’re ineligible for your major of choice, parallel planning can help. ACE Coaches identify alternative majors that help you achieve your career goals.
