The\u00a0<\/span>Haslam Leadership Scholars<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(HALS) program at the\u00a0University\u00a0of Tennessee,\u00a0Knoxville,\u00a0provides\u00a0selected\u00a0scholars\u00a0the unparalleled opportunity to cultivate leadership skills\u00a0and\u00a0inspire positive change in Tennessee and beyond.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in 2008 through\u00a0<\/span>the Haslam family<\/span><\/a>\u2019s\u00a0generous gift,\u00a0Haslam Leadership Scholars receive an endowed scholarship covering\u00a0tuition, fees, housing\u00a0and\u00a0support for\u00a0professional endeavors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For\u00a0these students,\u00a0a\u00a0UT\u00a0education is the\u00a0base\u00a0of what their future holds.\u00a0Meet three Haslam Leadership Schol<\/span>ars\u00a0forging\u00a0their own paths.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dylan Stewart<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Dylan Stewart<\/p><\/div>\n

Dylan Stewart, a recent physics graduate and neutron sciences researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), surprised himself when he chose UT after growing up in Knoxville. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Knoxville native\u00a0wanted\u2014and still wants\u2014to\u00a0<\/span>explore\u00a0his passions\u00a0wherever they lead him.\u00a0<\/span>As a Haslam Leadership Scholar,\u00a0he gained\u00a0globalized world experience while continuing to discover pockets\u00a0of Knoxville with every step he takes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart\u2019s cohort traveled to Costa Rica for their mini-term education abroad experience, a memory he fondly recalled as a one of many with the Haslam Leadership Scholars program.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He loves learning languages, and the education abroad encouraged him to engage with a new language while in university. Stewart embarked on an education abroad in Beijing and Taiwan after learning Chinese, an experience that turned the discipline into the cornerstone of his outlook.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cLearning another language in a totally different cultural context opens my worldview up and makes me a well-rounded person. I\u2019m so in love with multicultural contexts because I have had a lot of cool opportunities that revealed to me how the world is connected,\u201d said Stewart. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart added an Asian Studies major during his third year and found his two concentrations are not so far removed after all. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He found a natural synthesis of nuclear physics and international affairs through a combination of nonproliferation advocacy and work to support the world\u2019s sustainable energy supply through nuclear energy. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart studies neutron beta decay and how the magnetic field impacts proton travel through detectors at ORNL\u2019s Spallation Neutron Science. A physics faculty member initially introduced him to the faculty where he regularly collaborates with researchers and leading nuclear energy experts. Here, he\u2019s connected with neutron experts who encourage his self-guided contributions to the field. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart\u00a0graduated\u00a0in\u00a0May\u00a02026\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>intends to continue his research post-graduation. Upon concluding his HALS experience, he\u2019s confident he\u2019ll be a strong leader wherever he goes next, all thanks to his cohort\u2019s friendship. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe community\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been surrounded\u00a0with\u00a0has a lot of brilliant, amazing leaders in each of their own fields. I would\u00a0have never\u00a0gotten\u00a0the opportunity to meet them because we are on such different paths. Having that community has enabled me to excel in my future,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dylan\u2019s cohort established the \u201c2022 Haslam Leadership Scholars Legacy Scholarship Endowment\u201d so future students may have fulfilling opportunities like those the cohort experienced through the HALS program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ava Foley<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ava Foley<\/p><\/div>\n

Sometimes, one\u2019s motivations compound after a lifetime of experiences. That is exactly what happened for political science and public affairs senior Ava Foley, who is one of four students partaking in UT\u2019s first study abroad experience in Jordan. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before moving to the Nashville suburbs, Foley spent her early childhood in Brooklyn where her parents worked in the music industry and second chance education. There, she witnessed her united community launch successful sustained advocacy that showed her the power of organizing and of government to do good. <\/span>She carried that core belief all the way to UT to pursue a career rooted in service. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen the impact the government can have on people, both good and bad, and I understand how powerful of a medium it is to help people and to improve the lived experiences of not only my community members, but people across the country,\u201d Foley said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Foley watched her mother lead with compassion and the desire to make a positive impact, inspiring her to live her life altruistically by serving others. She learned exactly how she could turn her love for politics into a career when she got involved with advocacy in high school, eventually leading to government and public administration internships that would shape her political career thus far. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Foley knew she wanted to be a Haslam Leadership Scholar long before she applied. Her goal is to foster equality in justice, which could follow any number of careers, and the program\u2019s leadership curriculum met her need for an education that pushed beyond natural career pathways. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Haslam family, the University Honors team, university\u00a0leadership\u00a0and faculty welcomed Foley and her family with open arms when they arrived for Haslam Selection Weekend\u00a0the spring before her first year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis school values me. They value my education. They want me to succeed,\u201d Foley remembered thinking that weekend. \u201cThey care about my professional development and want to turn me into a leader.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her cohort\u2019s education abroad to Rwanda and Kenya renewed a deeply instilled principle that\u2019s been with Foley her whole life: Understanding an experience abstractly holds great value, yet going somewhere to learn from lived experiences is on an entirely different level. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why Foley wants to meet people all over the world and learn how she can serve them to make a positive impact. Her acceptance to the Jordan education abroad trip, where she\u2019ll go into refugee camps and connect with UN ambassadors, is a testament to the intentionality behind her leadership. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m interested in how I can learn from the people we\u2019re speaking\u00a0to and become more empathetic\u00a0in light of them,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Winter Biel<\/b><\/h2>\n

Winter Biel<\/p><\/div>\n

Finance junior Winter Biel pours herself into her volunteerism, community engagement and education, planting the beginnings of a career rooted in relationships. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Community was the determining factor in her decision to attend UT, and Biel knew she would inherit the foundations of a close-knit cohort when she accepted the offer to become a Haslam Leadership Scholar two years ago. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of HALS, Biel directs membership for Tennessee Capital Markets Society, where she stoked her investment banking interest by competing in the Balyasny Asset Management Stock Pitch Competition last fall. Tennessee Capital Markets Society\u2019s programming provides finance students with experiential learning to remain competitive candidates before key internship placements open.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She secured two investment banking internships for the upcoming summers after completing an investment banking and private equity internship in Nashville. This summer, Biel joins Victory Park Capital Advisors as a Private Credit Summer Analyst at in Chicago. She is the first UT student to obtain an Investment Banking Summer Analyst position at Bank of America, which will commence summer 2027.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After her cohort\u2019s education abroad in Vietnam and Cambodia, Biel is even more determined to lead with a listening ear and a methodical eye. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs I look ahead to the world\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0enter after these next few summers and after graduation, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just see systems or markets, instead, I see the people within them. I think that perspective will not only make me more effective, but also more intentional in the kind of impact I want to have,\u201d said Biel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Haslam Leadership Scholars program develops holistic leadership skills in business, engineering, agriculture, public policy and hospitality students through enriched cohort experiences, a specialized curriculum and internship search support. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biel\u00a0builds her career in finance so she can make strategic decisions\u00a0to influence growth for others. She\u00a0cites\u00a0her scholarship as a foundational piece of her achieved aspirations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe program has reframed the way that I think about leadership.\u00a0<\/span>It\u00a0<\/span>is something much bigger than individual success\u2014it is the impact you leave on the people you\u2019re surrounded with and the legacy you leave in the communities you\u2019re a part of,\u201d Biel shared. \u201cIt is about giving back to others because I have been poured into by so many.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
