Get Online Academic Assistance

The University of Tennessee offers free online academic support using Zoom, a video conferencing software that you can use on your phone or computer. Zoom allows you to use video, audio, chat, screensharing, and a whiteboard to work with a tutor, SI Leader, or Academic Coach. If you have difficulty scheduling an appointment through GradesFirst, contact studentsuccess@utk.edu or one of the administrators below.

Using Zoom for Your Session

Prior to the start of your session, download Zoom software by clicking on the meeting link and following the prompts to download the software. You are encouraged to open the software and get to know how it works before the session.

When it’s time for your session to begin, go to the link you were provided when you signed up for the appointment. Your session may be more effective on a computer, but the device you use is up to you. You’ll be prompted to enter your name, and you’ll be asked if you want to use computer audio or call into the session. You’ll also be prompted to open your computer or phone’s camera. For an optimal tutoring experience, we recommend using video.

For tutoring and coaching, you’ll then be placed in a waiting room until the coach or tutor is available. The waiting room is used to protect student privacy and prevent students from viewing another student’s sessions.

Once  the session begins, you and the coach or tutor will be able to talk over video or audio, chat, share screens, and use the whiteboard to work out problems. Sessions can also be recorded so that you can re-watch them.
