UT Junior Julia Dieter Named Truman Scholarship Finalist<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The\u202f<\/span>Office of Undergraduate Research & Fellowships<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u202f<\/span><\/b>at the University of\u202fTennessee, Knoxville has announced\u00a0that\u00a0junior Julia\u00a0Dieter\u00a0is\u00a0a finalist for the prestigious and highly competitive\u00a0<\/span>Truman Scholarship<\/span><\/b><\/a>.\u00a0She\u00a0is\u00a0one of\u00a0198 finalists\u00a0selected\u00a0from a pool of 781 applicants\u00a0representing\u00a0305 institutions\u00a0nationwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A public affairs major,\u00a0member of the\u00a0<\/span>Chancellor\u2019s Honors Program<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Baker Scholar<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0Dieter\u00a0will interview with the Truman Foundation\u00a0later this month, and recipients will be announced\u00a0in late April.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Raised in Signal Mountain, Tennessee,\u00a0she says the recognition\u00a0affirms her\u00a0dedication\u00a0to public service and her desire to\u00a0positively contribute\u00a0within the public sphere.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a Truman Finalist is an affirmation of more than just academic achievement. It is a recognition of my commitment to service and to advancing policy that I believe in and am passionate about,\u201d said Dieter.\u00a0\u201cIt’s been extremely empowering to be surrounded\u202fand uplifted by peers, professors, and mentors who have encouraged me to apply for programs like this one and to take those next steps in a career I previously didn’t see as possible.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Truman Scholarship recognizes students who\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0exceptional leadership, public service, and academic excellence.\u00a0The award\u00a0provides $30,000\u00a0for\u00a0graduate\u00a0study\u00a0in public service-related fields,\u00a0along with\u00a0leadership development opportunities, and access to a nationwide network of public service professionals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dieter\u00a0currently serves\u00a0as the sole\u00a0student\u00a0commissioner\u00a0on\u00a0the Tennessee Higher Education Commission,\u00a0representing\u00a0more than\u00a0220,000\u00a0students across the state.\u00a0As one of the first UT students in several years to hold\u00a0the role, she\u00a0has deepened her understanding of education\u00a0policy\u00a0and\u00a0government\u00a0leadership\u00a0through\u00a0intentional\u00a0collaboration with state officials and policy advisors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dieter\u00a0intends to pursue a master\u2019s\u00a0degree\u00a0in public policy with a concentration in education policy.\u00a0After\u00a0graduate\u00a0school, she\u00a0aims to begin her career\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0the Tennessee Department of Education, focusing on elevating state education standards and civic\u00a0knowledge, before\u00a0seeking\u00a0a larger role\u00a0in the Tennessee State General Assembly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On campus, Dieter\u00a0serves as an ambassador for the\u00a0university and\u00a0the\u00a0Baker School of Public Policy and Public\u00a0Affairs and\u00a0is involved\u00a0in\u00a0student\u00a0government.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJulia is an exceptional,\u00a0engaged, and\u00a0motivated\u00a0scholar and\u00a0leader\u00a0who\u00a0is already making a difference on\u00a0our campus and in\u00a0our\u00a0state,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Dr. Meredith M.\u00a0Malburne-Wade,\u00a0director of\u00a0Undergraduate\u00a0Research and Fellowships.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt is an honor\u00a0to work with\u00a0her\u00a0as she pursues the Truman\u00a0Scholarship.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eager to make her mark,\u00a0Dieter\u00a0credits the support she has received from\u00a0UT\u00a0with\u00a0empowering\u00a0a greater belief in herself and what she can achieve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI care deeply about the health of Tennessee’s education, and I plan to play a role in changing the public perceptions of education in the South,\u201d said Dieter.\u00a0\u201cI am committed to this state and will seek a career in the state assembly so that I can see my ideas and vision for the state come to fruition.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fullbright U.S. Student Program Opens April 2<\/h4>\n
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program that offers funded, year-long post-graduate research, grad degrees, arts projects, and teaching opportunities in one of 140+ countries around the world. AURA Awards Available to Fund Independent Research and Creative Projects<\/h4>\n
The\u00a0Advanced Undergraduate Research Activity<\/a>\u00a0(AURA) program promotes advanced research and creative activities by awarding $1500 stipends to students who collaborate with a faculty mentor to design an independent research\/creative project for summer 2024.<\/div>\n
All currently enrolled UTK undergraduate students not graduating in May are eligible to apply. Research may be conducted independently or in support of a capstone.<\/div>\n
Stipends of $250 may be available for research, materials, and travel expenses. An additional $250 may be available for the faculty mentor\u2019s materials to support the AURA awardee.<\/div>\n

URA is a student-led mentoring group providing peer-based support for undergraduate students seeking and involved in research at UTK. There are two levels of recognition: Excellence in Undergraduate Research receives a specialty cord, and Distinction in Undergraduate Research receives a specialty medallion plus the cord.<\/div>\n

Apply for a URF Travel Grant to present your undergraduate research or creative work at a non-UTK sponsored conference or event.<\/div>\n
The grants vary by location: $300 for in-state conferences, $500 for national conferences, $800 for international conferences, and $100 for virtual conference registration.<\/div>\n
Apply by May 1st, 2024 for travel between April 1 and June 30.<\/b><\/div>\n

Fullbrighters with Disabilities: Disability Justice in India<\/h4>\n

As a 2018 US Fulbright Research Grantee to India, Istou Diallo, explored notions of disability in Indian society while highlighting strategies disabled Indians employed to challenge their societal and political marginalization.<\/div>\n
At this Fulbrighters with Disabilities event, Istou will share what led her to research this topic, what she learned comparing disability justice movements in the U.S. and India, and tips for prospective Fulbright applicants.<\/div>\n

A Q&A session will occur towards the end.<\/p>\n
