{"id":2682,"date":"2018-11-18T10:17:55","date_gmt":"2018-11-18T15:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugresearch.utk.edu\/?p=2682"},"modified":"2018-11-18T10:17:55","modified_gmt":"2018-11-18T15:17:55","slug":"rigney-named-rhodes-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/2018\/11\/18\/rigney-named-rhodes-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Rigney Named Rhodes Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3624\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3624\" class=\"wp-image-3624 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/grant-rigney.jpg\" alt=\"Grant Rigney\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grant Rigney<\/p><\/div>\n<p>UT senior Grant Rigney, has been named a Rhodes Scholar\u2014the eighth in university history\u2014and will begin his graduate studies at Oxford University next fall.<\/p>\n<p>Rigney, a student in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Normandy, Tennessee, is the editor-in-chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/trace.tennessee.edu\/pursuit\/\"><em>Pursuit<\/em><\/a>, UT\u2019s journal of undergraduate research, and has conducted research at the UT Medical Center on toxicity of PET-CT imaging agents. While at Oxford, Rigney will pursue masters degrees in Global Health Science and Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, 32 scholars are selected from 16 districts across the United States. District 12 encompasses Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. Scholars receive tuition, fees, travel and a monthly stipend during their two years of post-baccalaureate study. Applicants are chosen on the criteria of academic excellence, character, leadership, and must \u201cbe conscious of inequities\u201d in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Rigney volunteers at a local homeless clinic and founded the Homeless Prevention University and Community Alliance at UT.
