Their research titled, <em>Materials Selection for High Temperature Neutron Scattering Sample Containers,<\/em> was part of a senior design group project that also included undergraduates Ahmad Alghadeer and Shiyi Chen. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3988\" style=\"width: 308px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3988\" class=\"wp-image-3988\" src=\"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/TCE-Undergrads.jpg\" alt=\"MSE undergraduates at the spallation neutron source at ORNL\" width=\"298\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/TCE-Undergrads.jpg 814w, https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/TCE-Undergrads-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/urf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/TCE-Undergrads-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Ahmad Alghadeer, Shiyi Chen, Reece Emery, Ian Greeley, and Joshua McCoy at\u00a0 Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Lab, 2019<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">They presented their work characterizing and identifying key failure mechanisms of furnace experiment sample cannisters, and detailed several possible solutions to prevent the failure modes during future experiments. NSD scientists and technicians have already tested or plan to test\/implement several of their solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The team was advised by Dr. Claudia Rawn and Dr. Katharine Page in the spring semester course MSE 489, led by Dr. Kurt Sickafus.
