{"id":109,"date":"2022-08-25T13:53:15","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T17:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/ve\/?page_id=109"},"modified":"2026-02-22T20:30:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T01:30:38","slug":"success-grant","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/studentsuccess.utk.edu\/ve\/success-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Success Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><hr class=\"orange-hash\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is committed to helping every student achieve success through innovative, evidence-based teaching that maximizes learning and promotes well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In support of the university\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/utk.edu\/vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategic Vision<\/a>, UT has committed funding to prioritize active, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments to increase academic achievement and support UT faculty in reimagining learning experiences from this perspective. Desired results for Student Success Grants include:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reducing DFW rates\u202fin high-enrollment, entry-level courses&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhancing student well-being&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Closing academic achievement gaps&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grant Summary<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grants are awarded to departments to redesign a course or a set of sequenced classes. Priority is given to courses with high DFW rates, gateway courses, and courses with high enrollment, and collaborative support is provided by the Division of Student Success and the office of Teaching and Learning Innovation. The redesign should focus on department\/curricular priorities and how to achieve those priorities through evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. Successful grants to date have included:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A collaborative effort across the department, including faculty who have recently taught the course as well as those teaching in future years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teams including representation from multiple faculty ranks and graduate students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A department representative to serve as the lead to oversee the strategic direction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence-based curricular or instructional strategies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/organizationalexcellence.virginia.edu\/change-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">change management plan<\/a> and a detailed budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A commitment to provide interim updates and a final report to the vice provost for Student Success, including artifacts that demonstrate changes to the course and its implementation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-background\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Student Success Grant Awardees<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"panel-group\" id=\"custom-collapse-0\" role=\"tablist\" aria-multiselectable=\"true\"><\/div><div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Biological Sciences - Grant: Biology Booster Shot<\/a><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"custom-collapse-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\"><div class=\"panel-body\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Course(s): <\/em><\/strong>Biology 150 and Biology 160&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Project Leads: <\/em><\/strong>Dr. Caroline Weinhold &amp; Dr. Randall Small&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Awarded: <\/em><\/strong>Fall 2021&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Project Goals:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improve student success by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enhancing learner support programs in collaboration with the Academic Success Center;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Re-aligning and re-focusing the learning objectives and pedagogical approaches used in the courses; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating a culture of continuous pedagogical reflection and innovation framed within positive psychology for faculty and staff.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-term goal for all three prongs is to create a sustainable approach to Supplemental Instruction and faculty development in large team-taught courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-1\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-1\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Engineering Fundamentals - Grant: Developing Self-Efficacy and Confidence Among Pre-Calculus Engineering Students<\/a><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"custom-collapse-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\"><div class=\"panel-body\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Course(s): <\/em><\/strong>Engineering Fundamentals 141 and 142 (Introduction to Physics and Modeling for Engineers I and II)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Project Leads: <\/em><\/strong>Dr. Erin McCave and Dr. Darren Mackza&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Awarded: <\/em><\/strong>Spring 2022&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Project Goals: <\/em><\/strong>Our primary goals for this project are as follows:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop student self-awareness specifically focusing on how positive or negative thoughts impact students\u2019 performance in the classroom.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop increased confidence(self-efficacy) in ability to achieve in math and physics concepts.
