Many Honors Vols choose to study, serve, or research abroad as part of their UT experience. In addition to the many trips facilitated by UT’s Programs Abroad office, we sponsor several exclusive opportunities each year.
UT Honors in Cambridge
Each summer, during the second academic session (July-early August) a UT honors faculty member leads a trip to jolly ole’ England. Our scholars get to live in Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge for 4-5 weeks while taking two honors classes. The classes are complemented by weekly field trips to popular sites such as the British Museum, Palace of Westminster, Canterbury Cathedral, Dover Castle, Liverpool’s International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Docks, and Beatles Story Experience. We also build a long weekend in the schedule so students can travel on their own. Many of our former Honors Vols chose to use that time to weekend in Paris, while others chose to stay in the U.K. and travel to Scotland.
UT Honors in Costa Rica
Each spring semester, we offer a cultures and civilizations general education course titled “Plants, Parks, and People: From the Smokies to San Jose.” In this course, scholars explore the diverse world of plants and what they mean to us as a global society, to specific cultures in the tropics, and to the policies and programs people have developed to conserve these critical resources. This will be contrasted with some of the native ecosystems we may be more familiar with in East Tennessee. Additionally, we will consider the impact these plants and ecosystems have on our lives across many different spectrums. During spring break, the students in this course will travel to Costa Rica for a tropical adventure that includes visits to the Towering Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, a coffee farm, hummingbird garden, and more.
