September Events

Fall Festival: Monday, September 11 7:00-8:00 p.m. | Humanities and Social Sciences Lawn All honors students come together to kick off the fall semester with KnoxDough, games, Honors swag, and more. Stop by from 7-8 on September 11th at HSS lawn for a good time!

Money and Mac: Wednesday, September 13 6:00 p.m. Dogwood Hall, G012 Want to learn more about saving money and how to budget while in college? Stop by this event in Dogwood G012 to learn more from financial wellness while eating some Chick-Fil-A mac and cheese!

Singo and Slingo: Wednesday, September 20 | 7:00 p.m. MagDog Courtyard Ready for some 2000’s pop singo? Stop by MagDog Courtyard at 7 for some good music and an Honors tote bag! No RSVP required.
Honors Campus Clean Up: Thursday, September 21 | 6:00-8:00 p.m. | Student Union Students will meet in the Student Union, room TBD, at 6pm. Water will be provided. Students will be informed of the cleanup procedures and will be given the proper supplies (trash bags, garbage pickers). Students will clean up campus and the surrounding areas and return to the Student Union at 8pm. Please join and check our GroupMe for more info!
Women’s Coordinating Council Interest Meeting: Thursday, September 21 | 6:00-7:00 p.m. | Cowan Cottage Get to know the Women’s Coordinating Council, our mission, and how to help promote Anti-Racism, Gender Equity, LGBTQ+ Inclusivity, and Reproductive Justice! There will be snacks!
Mindfulness Mondays: September 4, 11, 18, 25 10:00-10:30 a.m. | Dogwood Courtyard Kick off your week with some mindfulness. Whether you need stress reduction or to release some tension, these classes from 10-10:30 in the Dogwood Courtyard should help you feeling great for the week.

Study Skills for Honors Success Workshop: Monday, September 25 5:00 p.m. Cowan Cottage In search of new techniques to freshen up your study skills this semester?

Attend the Study Skills for Honors Success workshop for Vol Success Week! This workshop will address the unique barriers to studying that Honors students typically face in college and introduce new and innovative study strategies that can help you succeed in the semester ahead.

Join Elle Peeples for this workshop on Monday, September 25th at 5pm in Cowan Cottage (next to Strong Hall).

October Events

Nutrition Jeopardy: Wednesday, October 11 7:00 p.m. |  Dogwood Hall, G012 VolDining’s nutritionist, Taylor Koenigs, is hosting a nutrition workshop and game night for Honors students! She will be discussing the basics of nutrition and how to navigate this campus’s dining options. The event will be October 11th at 7 p.m. in Dogwood G012.

Guest Lecture: “Impacts of Limitations of Workforce Development in Machining on U.S. National Security” by Dr. Tony Schmitz: Wednesday, October 11 1:00-2:00 p.m. Howard Baker Toyota Auditorium Stop by the Baker School Toyota Auditorium to hear a lecture by Dr. Tony Schmitz. The lecture, “Impacts of Limitations of Workforce Development in Machining on U.S. National Security” will be October 11th from 1 to 2 p.m. and is hosted by the Center for National Security & Foreign Affairs and the Baker School for Public Policy and Public Affairs.
Halloween Movie Night: Friday, October 13 7:00-9:00 p.m. Howard Baker Toyota Auditorium Join our Honors Student Engagement Council for a spooky movie night October 13th from 7-9 p.m. in the Howard Baker Toyota Auditorium. There will be snacks, Halloween bags, chills, and thrills.

Health Professions Fair: Tuesday, October 17 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Student Union Ballroom The Health Professions Fair is a great opportunity to meet with representatives from different health profession programs across the country. All majors are welcome! The fair is October 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
Honors Oktoberfest: Thursday, October 19 7:00-8:00 p.m. Dogwood Courtyard On October 19th from 7-8 p.m. Honors and CHEW will be hosting our own Oktoberfest! There will be pretzels, mocktails, swag, and alcohol awareness information for all who attend. We can’t wait to see you there!

Honors Pumpkin Patch: Monday, October 23 7:00-8:00 p.m. | Dogwood Hall Join us for some fall fun at the Honors Pumpkin Patch on October 23 at Dogwood Hall! Pick out a mini pumpkin and decorate your space just in time for Halloween.
HSEC Balancing Academics: Tuesday, October 24 6:00-7:00 p.m. Humanities and Social Sciences Building, 104 Join the Honors Student Engagement Council for cookies, meditation, and create your own stress balls to find some balance in preparation for midterms!
HSEC Halloween Party: Monday, October 30 | 7:00-8:00 p.m. | Humanities and Social Sciences Building, 51 The Honors Student Engagement Council has planned a Halloween Party! Come by in your best silly or scary costume for a chance to win a gift card. There will also be games, trivia, Brenz, and swag bag! Stop by Monday, October 31 from 7 to 8 p.m. in Humanities and Social Sciences, Room 51.

Halloween Open House: Tuesday, October 31 | 1:00-3:00 p.m. | Student Union, 201 (Center for Career Development & Academic Engagement/University Honors Suite) Join University Honors and the CCDAE this Halloween for a Halloween Open House! From 1-3 p.m., come trick-or-treat in staff offices and while you’re here, meet with a peer career advisor during drop-in hours!

A peer career advisor can assist with resume and cover letter review, and help you set up and improve your LinkedIn and Handshake profiles. You can even take a professional headshot in the photo booth!

Grad School Prep Month Interested in graduate school and continuing your education after graduation? Join the Center for Career Development and Academic Exploration during the month of October for Grad School Prep Month! Attend workshops and fairs to learn more about graduate and professional school admissions and options.

November Events

Knoxville Botanical Gardens Service Day: Thursday, November 9 | 3:00-5:00 p.m. | Knoxville Botanical Gardens The Honors Student Engagement Council has planned another service event! They will be volunteering on November 9 from 3-5 p.m. at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens. HSEC will be cleaning up invasive species. Wearing long pants, closed-toed shoes, and long-sleeves are recommended! There are 35 spots available for student volunteers.
Honors Group Coaching Session: Wednesday, November 15 | 6:00-7:00 p.m. | Student Union, 225 University Honors, as part of International Education Week, will be having a Ready For the World group coaching session on Wednesday, November 15 from 6 – 7 p.m. in SU 225. We will be detailing non-study abroad options for fulfilling the requirement, including service projects, internships, and research options.

If you’re interested in attending, please fill out this Google Form prior to attending. Space is limited to the first 35 respondents.

Study Abroad Informational Session: Wednesday, November 15 | 6:30-7:30 p.m. | Humanity and Social Science Building, 51B Come learn about study abroad opportunities, ask questions to Dr. Jennings, and enjoy some pizza!

Crepes and Careers: Thursday, November 16 | 11:00 a.m. | Student Union, 377A

Come learn how to market your involvement to potential employers for your resume while enjoying refreshments and crepes! This event, hosted by Student Engagement, will take place in the Student Union room 377A at 11 a.m. on November 16.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil: Monday, November 20 | 5:30-6:30 p.m. | Student Union Cumberland Plaza Join the Pride Center for their annual Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil, a candlelit vigil ceremony where we honor those trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people taken from us over the last year due to transphobic violence.

This ceremony will take place Monday, November 20 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Cumberland Plaza.

Cambridge Summer Program Informational Session: Monday, November 20 | 6:00 p.m. | Student Union, 229
You could be invited to live and study on the campus of Emmanuel College, the center of Cambridge University since its founding in 1584. The campus grounds features beautiful gardens and ponds, modern dorms and classrooms nicely integrated with medieval walls, and a chapel designed in 1677 by the renowned English architect, Christopher Wren. Emmanuel is a quiet refuge within a vibrant and bustling city, minutes away from the downtown market square, a great variety of restaurants and shops, and a large park enjoyed by picnickers and cricket players.
University Honors will hold an informational session for Honors students, Monday, November 20 at 6 p.m. in SU 229. If you are interested in attending the informational session, please RSVP here to save a spot.

Prepare for the Fair: Wednesday, February 14 | 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. | Student Union, 262
The Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration will host multiple job fairs this spring for current students interested in internships, part-time jobs, and full-time career opportunities. To gain skills and build confidence before the fairs, students can attend Prepare for the Fair on Wednesday, February 14 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in 262 Student Union. Employers will be there to critique resumes, and staff will present 15-minute fair workshops.

Undergraduate Research Seminar Series: How to Write and Abstract: Thursday, February 22 | 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. | Zoom
Do you have a hard time summing up your research project into a succinct paragraph? URF will be hosting a “How to Write an Abstract” seminar featuring Dr. Kirsten Benson, director of the Writing Center. This seminar will teach you tips and strategies for writing an effective and compelling abstract for research projects and papers. The seminar will be held February 22, from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. via Zoom.

URF Office Hours on Ped Walkway: Thursday, February 29 | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Pedestrian Walkway Vol Success Week returns with Office Hours on Ped Walkway!

Every spring, UT hosts Vol Success Week, a week-long series of events for students to learn about and refamiliarize themselves with campus resources ahead of mid-terms. This year, URF will offer Office Hours on the Ped to provide speed advising for students interested in research and fellowships.
Find them on Pedestrian Walkway between your morning classes, Thursday, February 29 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. More information about Vol Success Week can be found here.

All students, faculty, and staff who are in need of a first-time passport are invited to attend to receive support and application materials to make the first step in getting abroad!
