Advocate Award

The First-Generation Advocate Award recognizes outstanding leadership, advocacy, contributions of one faculty and one staff member in promoting an inclusive and welcoming climate that respects a diverse campus community at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The recipients will have demonstrated the following criteria:

  • Commitment to the advancement of first-generation scholars on campus;
  • Service, leadership, and volunteerism in first-generation programs, initiatives, and events;
  • Advocacy and mentorship to first-generation scholars; and
  • Making a notable impact through dedication to and support of the university’s first-generation population.

Purpose:

The purpose of the First-Generation Advocate Award will recognize two UT staff and faculty members who have made significant contributions to the success of first-generation college students through mentorship, programs and initiatives, research, or the implementation of first-generation student success strategies into their everyday work.


 Eligibility:

  • All currently employed University of Tennessee, Knoxville employees including administrators, faculty, exempt staff, and non-exempt staff are eligible for this award;
  • Anyone who has received the award in the preceding five years is ineligible for consideration;
  • Recipients must be nominated by a UT faculty, staff, student, or student organization; and
  • Nomination received by March 31 annually.

Selection Process:

  • Recipients of the First-Generation Advocate Award will have been nominated by a current student, faculty or staff member.
  • Recipients will be selected by a committee of reviewers.  
  • Reviewers will be responsible for reviewing the nomination requests, verifying academic records, and ultimately selecting the recipients based on their contributions and impact to the UT and first-generation communities.
  • Recipients will be recognized at the annual First-Generation Graduates Reception.

  2. Provide a descriptive narrative addressing the reason for the nomination and the nature of contributions and advocacy to the first-generation community performed by the nominee

 The recipient will have demonstrated the following criteria: 

  • Commitment to the advancement of first-generation scholars on campus;
  • Service, leadership, and volunteerism in first-generation programs, initiatives, and events;
  • Advocacy and mentorship to first-generation scholars; and
  • Making a notable impact through dedication to and support of the university’s first-generation population.

Award recipients will be recognized at our Annual First-Generation Graduates Reception in spring.

There is no specific time frame in which the nominee should have been employed with the University.

While supporting documents are not required, nominators may choose to upload the nominee’s resume, publications, or other documents that they feel support their nomination.
