Coaching

Walking Beside You on Your Path to Purpose

At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, we know academic distinction is not something students pursue alone. Students thrive when people know them, value them, and help them see what they can become.

In University Honors, coaching goes beyond standard academic advising. We look at more than degree sheets and course registration. We get to know the whole person. Through one-on-one conversations, your Honors coach helps you turn your natural talents into lifelong strengths and connect your curiosity to meaningful work.

“When we talk about your success, we are talking about your potential. Every scholar arrives on Rocky Top with distinctive gifts, lived experiences, and dreams. Honors coaching helps you navigate that journey with people by your side. It gives you space to pause, reflect on what matters most, and build a plan for a life of purpose.”

— Dr. Talisha Adams, Senior Director, University Honors

Discovering Your Natural Talents: CliftonStrengths

Your honors journey begins with self-discovery. Every honors scholar completes the CliftonStrengths assessment, which helps you identify your top themes of talent.

Across University Honors, our scholars most often lead with Achiever, Relator, Learner, and Competition.

What does that look like in everyday life on Rocky Top? It means our students bring a strong drive to do meaningful work, ask deeper questions, keep improving, and build lasting friendships along the way. In our community, these talents do not create isolated competition. They help students challenge, encourage, and support one another.

We do not try to fit every student into the same mold.

Strengths-based coaching starts with what is already right with you. When you understand how you think, make decisions, build relationships, and solve problems, you can approach college with more clarity and confidence. Your strengths can guide how you choose leadership roles, select research projects, navigate teams, and step into new opportunities.

Every Strength Has a Place to Lead

If your top five talents look different from that list, you still belong here.

There is no single profile for academic distinction. An analytical thinker who loves complex data, an empathetic connector who builds bridges across communities, and a strategist who maps creative solutions all strengthen this community.

Success does not come from copying someone else’s talents. It comes from understanding who you are, learning how your gifts shape the way you move through the world, and leading with authenticity. In University Honors, every set of strengths can make a meaningful difference on Rocky Top.

“We do not believe in cookie-cutter excellence. Brilliance looks different in every student. Whether you lead with focus, empathy, creativity, or strategy, your talents belong here. Our job is to help you recognize and use the strengths you already have.”

— Dr. Amber Williams, Senior Vice Provost for Student Success and Chief Honors Officer

Crafting Your Personalized Success Plan

Knowing your strengths is only the starting point. Honors coaching helps you turn self-awareness into action.

Throughout your time at UTK, you meet regularly with your Honors coach to build and update your personal Success Plan. Together, you map out:

  • Long-Term Aspirations: Identify where you feel called to lead, whether that means heading to medical school, launching a community initiative, entering corporate leadership, or pursuing creative work.
  • Strategic Campus Milestones: Connect your long-term goals to opportunities at UTK, including internships, service-learning projects, research, campus leadership, and global experiences.
  • Resilience and Recalibration: When challenges arise, your coach helps you pause, make sense of what you are learning, adjust your plan, and move forward with confidence.

A Dedicated Circle of Specialized Mentors

High-achieving students often carry more than one goal at a time. Your Honors coach connects you with specialized mentors who can support your academic, career, and research interests.

  • Personal Research Librarians: Every honors student can work with a professional librarian connected to their field of study. Whether you are reviewing engineering research, exploring historical archives, or working with public health data, your librarian helps you sharpen your questions and strengthen your research.
  • Specialized Career Coaches: Career development professionals help you turn classroom learning, leadership roles, and hands-on experiences into a strong professional story. They support you with interview preparation, networking, and internship searches.
  • Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Coaches: Partners in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships help scholars pursue original research, creative inquiry, and competitive awards. Your fellowships coach can help you shape your story, strengthen your proposals, and prepare for opportunities such as Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, and Truman scholarships.

When you join University Honors on Rocky Top, you do more than enroll in advanced courses. You join a network of mentors, coaches, and advocates who want to help you grow, lead, and build a future with purpose.
