Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions students ask most about course-specific instruction, study sessions, and academic support at UT.

What’s the difference between academic coaching, study sessions, and Supplemental Instruction?

Academic coaching helps students improve how they learn, not just what they learn. Coaches support skills like note-taking, studying, organization, time management, and retaining information across all courses.

Study sessions are one-on-one or group meetings to review class material regularly or for an upcoming exam. Study sessions are hosted by Peer Learning Assistants, who are undergraduate students who have already successfully completed the course they host study sessions for.

Supplemental Instruction is after-class review sessions paired with an ongoing course.

Is everything on this page free?

Yes, campus resources are free for students!

Do I need an appointment?

While not always required, we recommend making an appointment. Appointments help support staff reserve time to help you during busy seasons, like midterms and final exams. Some campus support services offer drop-in appointments, meaning you can walk in without making an appointment. It varies, so check on the service’s website or contact the service if you have questions!

Can graduate students use these services?

Graduate students can use many of these services, like the libraries’ assistance program, the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center, and the Public Speaking Center. Other services, like the Math Place and Vols Study 24/7, are designed to help students taking introductory courses and do not support advanced curricula.

What’s Vols Study 24/7, and how does it work?

Vols Study 24/7 is free, live, one-on-one academic learning support available 24/7, including nights, weekends and academic breaks. Through Canvas, access Vols Study 24/7 to chat with learning support specialists, ask questions asynchronously, and use study tools within the site.

What are the hours of service for Vols Study 24/7?

Vols Study 24/7 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, even when the UT campus is closed!

How often can I use Vols Study 24/7?

You can use the video calling service for five hours per semester.

Can I go back and review previous Vols Study 24/7 sessions?

Yes! You can rewatch the recordings of your Vols Study 24/7 sessions anytime.

Is Vols Study 24/7 replacing any current on-campus learning support centers?

Absolutely not! Vols Study 24/7 provides you support outside of normal operating hours, meaning it’s there during quiet hours. The Academic Success Center and campus academic-support services still provide study help for UT courses as well as contact with an academic coach and peer-led assistance.

What are the qualifications of the Vols Study 24/7 Learning Support Specialists?

Over 96% of Learning Support Specialists have obtained at least a master’s degree in the subject in which they support.

I’m unsure about my major, who can help me figure it out?
