Frequently Asked Questions

Advising & Appointments

All degree-seeking undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, are assigned an academic advisor who can help with academic planning, majors, career paths, and opportunities like study abroad or service learning.

Visit your college’s advising office or webpage to learn more about your advising process. To view your College Advising Center, please click here.

You can find your advisor by logging into MyUTK or Vol Connect.

  • MyUTK
    • On the left side of the page, you’ll see your academic and personal profile, which will include your student ID, email, classification, major, etc. Your advisor’s name is also listed.
  • Vol Connect
    • Option #1: Click on “My Vol Success Team” to see your advisor(s) and other Success Team members (e.g., career coach).
    • Option #2: In the top navigation bar, go to “Connect” and choose “Vol Success Team” or “Schedule an Appointment”. Both options will show your advisor’s information. The “Schedule an Appointment” option, however, will show your primary advisor’s information in the “Assigned” tab. You can also schedule an appointment with someone on your success team by viewing their information in the “Teams” tab.

  • Current/Returning Students
    • Advising appointments can be scheduled through Vol Connect or by contacting your advisor directly. To see your advisor’s information in Vol Connect click on “My Vol Success Team.” If you encounter issues, please reach out to your college’s advising office for assistance.
  • New Students
    • Visit First-Year Experience and review information for Vol 102: New Student Advising, Fall Orientation and/or Spring Orientation.

If your advisor is unresponsive, try contacting the advising center of your college or department for support. You may also request to be connected with another advisor.

For general advising appointments, contact your college’s advising center if you miss or need to reschedule an appointment.

If your question is about advising during New Student Orientation, visit First-Year Experience and review the information for Vol 102: New Student Advising, Fall Orientation, or Spring Orientation.

Please keep in mind that response times may be longer during peak advising periods.

Advising helps you plan for degree completion, connect with resources and opportunities, and get the guidance you need for a successful UT experience. Some programs may also require advising at certain times.

Contact your college’s advising center and explain your situation. They will guide you through the process.

Students can access Vol Connect through any of the following actions:

Major Changes

To change your major, contact the college’s advising center for the department you wish to transfer into. They will provide you with the necessary forms and instructions as some majors have specific requirements. All official changes are processed in the Registrar’s Office.

If you’re unsure about how to complete the major change form, reach out to your current advisor or the advising center of the new department for clarification.

Visit the programs, degree, and certificates overview here.

Registration & Course Access

If a class is full, you can join the waitlist (if available) or contact the course instructor or department for permission to enroll.

You can check for holds by logging into your student portal and reviewing your account summary. Holds are typically listed under “Registration Status.”

Prerequisites are listed in the course catalog or syllabus. If you’re unsure, consult with your advisor or the department offering the course.

Visit One Stop Student Services for help with how to register, when to register, and other tips to help you complete the registration process.

UT uses the Course Program of Study (CPOS) process to track which courses count toward your degree. To learn more about the process and how the courses you choose matter, click here.

For study abroad-related concerns, contact the study abroad office or your academic advisor. You can also view important information on the One Stop Student Services current student resources webpage.

Academic Concerns

To request an incomplete grade, speak with your course instructor and follow university guidelines for submitting an official request. If you need additional assistance with academic policies, visit One Stop Student Services policy resources.

If you notice a discrepancy between your Canvas grades and official records, start by contacting your instructor to clarify the issue. In many cases, calculation or entry errors can be resolved directly with the instructor, who can then submit a grade change if needed. If the discrepancy is not resolved or you believe the recorded grade is inaccurate, you may need to follow the formal grade appeal process through the university.

Orientation & Transfer Information

The New Vol Experience has multiple phases (Vol 101 – 106) to support a smooth transition to UT. Be sure to look at the orientation information appropriate for you (e.g. fall orientation is for students entering UT in the fall term).

Parking instructions will be emailed about a week before your Vol 103: On-Campus Experience session. While you may not receive a physical pass, be sure to park only in the designated reserved lot.

Prerequisites are listed in the course catalog or syllabus. If you’re unsure, consult with your advisor or the department offering the course.

Visit the Transfer Students webpage to view important dates, admission checklist, next steps, and other transfer resources.

Transfer students usually need transcripts from previous institutions and other requested materials to meet specific program requirements. Check with Admissions for a full list.

All students must meet the U.S. History requirement by completing one year in high school or two college semesters (6 credits) to earn a degree in Tennessee. U.S. Government and/or civic courses do not currently satisfy the U.S. History requirement. Evidence of satisfying this requirement must be supplied on an official high school or college transcript.

Miscellaneous Student Support

The Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) is an online tool in MyUTK that shows your progress toward your degree. It lists completed courses, remaining requirements, transfer credits, GPA, and any approved exceptions. DARS can also run “what-if” audits to explore different majors, minors, or degree options.

Information about digital learning options is available on the university’s online learning webpage or you can inquire with your academic advisor.

If you take time off from UT (excluding summer), you must apply for readmission through Undergraduate Admissions. Deadlines vary by semester and your academic standing, and they are firm—check the website carefully. You may also meet with an Academic Success Center coach to plan strategies for your return.
