Why a professional photo matters

A professional photo helps create your personal brand! Whether you’re applying for a job, networking online, or updating your Handshake profile, a professional photo can make your outreach more memorable and meaningful.

How to access the photo booth

The CCDAE photo booth is free and simple to use, and it’s open to students, faculty, and staff year-round. Here’s what to expect:

  • When to come. Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., no appointment needed.
  • Where to check in. The front desk at the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration. A staff member will help you use the booth.
  • How long it takes. Less than 15 minutes from start to finish.
  • One requirement. A Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration representative needs to be with you while you use the booth.

What to wear

You’ll want to wear business professional or business casual attire for your photo. Since your photo will be a headshot, focus especially on what you wear from the waist up. Consider the purpose of your photo and the type of job or internship you’re most likely to seek.

Coming from class? Restrooms are located nearby if you’d like to bring a change of clothes and change before your photo.

Solid colors and darker neutral shades tend to photograph well. Avoid distracting patterns. If you wear a patterned shirt or tie, consider pairing it with a solid jacket or sweater. Keep accessories simple so the focus stays on you. Consider what’s typical for the industry or field you’re interested in.

Need help finding the right outfit? Borrow professional clothing for free from Smokey’s Closet, or explore the Professional Clothing Options guide for additional resources available to UT students.
