Patrick Biddix

Biography

J. Patrick Biddix is Professor of Higher Education and Associate Director of the Postsecondary Education Research Center (PERC) in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK). He teaches graduate courses in research, assessment and evaluation, and special topics in higher education and student affairs. In 2015, he received a Fulbright Award to study college student technology use at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. His areas of expertise include research design and assessment and postsecondary outcomes.

Biddix has an active family of five that includes his wife and three young children. Aside from spending time with them (which includes Legos, music, sports, and the occasional date night), he enjoys listening to hip-hop music and playing board games.


Research

Dr. Biddix’s research has appeared in prominent student affairs and communication technology journals. He is the author or co-author of seven monographs and books including Research Methods and Applications for Student Affairs (Jossey-Bass, 2018), and the 2nd edition textbook of Assessment in Student Affairs (Jossey-Bass, 2016).

Biddix is an active member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) a frequent presenter at the Annual Conference. He has served on the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) Board of Directors and the NASPA Assessment, Evaluation, and Research (AER) Knowledge Community Leadership Team. He is associate editor for book reviews the Journal of College Student Development (JCSD), and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice (JSARP), and the NASPA Journal about Women in Higher Education (NJAWE), and Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (Editor from 2009-2013).

Education

Biddix received his PhD in Education with a Concentration in Higher Education from the University of Missouri in St. Louis (2006). He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Institutional Research from UMSL (2005). He received an MA in Higher Education Administration from the University of Mississippi (2003) and a BA in Classical Civilization from the University of Tennessee (2001).


Professional Service

Biddix is as a member of the University of Tennessee Athletics Board and former chair of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services Tenure and Promotion Committee. He has served the ELPS Department in a variety of capacities including Associate Department Head, Accreditation Liaison, Program Review Coordinator, IRB Departmental Review Chair, Graduate Advisor, and formerly as College Student Personnel (CSP) Program Coordinator.

He also served on the University Institutional Review Board (IRB) from 2014-2017. Prior to coming to UT, he worked for six years as Associate Professor and Higher Education Program Coordinator at Valdosta State University and spent three years as a student affairs professional in fraternity/sorority life at Washington University in St. Louis.

Amongst his distinctions, Dr. Biddix has received three faculty excellence awards (2010, 2011, 2015).
