At a Glance: Academic Standing
This page summarizes university policy to help you understand your academic standing. For complete details, always refer to the official UT catalog.
You’re meeting the minimum GPA required for graduation (2.0 cumulative). Keep doing what works—and visit the Academic Success Center anytime to strengthen your study strategies, time management, or test preparation.
You’re in good standing when:
- Both your semester (term) GPA and your cumulative GPA are 2.0 or higher.
Probation is an early‑intervention phase to help you raise your GPA and get back on track.
During probation, you must meet with an advisor before registering (including summer) and complete Academic Success Center programming.
You are placed on probation if either:
- Your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 for one semester
- Your semester GPA falls below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters.
See more on our Academic Probation webpage.
Dismissal follows a sustained pattern of grades below university standards. Dismissed students cannot enroll (full‑time or part‑time, including online) during the mandatory absence.
You are placed on dismissal if:
- You are on probation and, at the end of the semester, both your cumulative GPA and your semester GPA are below 2.0, you will be dismissed. Dismissal limits your enrollment and student privileges for a set period, based on whether it is your first, second, or third dismissal.
See more on our Academic Dismissal webpage.
Dismissal Reinstatement allows continued UT enrollment without interruption for eligible students after a First Academic Dismissal. It may require changing degree programs if you no longer meet your college’s requirements; reinstatement does not change college‑specific requirements.
Some students may continue enrollment without interruption after a first dismissal if they meet eligibility criteria and commit to required actions (advising deadlines, ASC workshops/coaching, and a 2.00 term GPA).
See more on our Dismissal Reinstatement webpage.
If you believe there are extraordinary circumstances that affected your academic performance, you may submit an appeal. Appeals are reviewed by the Undergraduate Council Appeals Committee.
