Work at the ASC

The Academic Success Center (ASC) offers many opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and higher education professionals seeking experience in leadership and/or learning assistance. For more information, contact Human Resources. 

The Vol Study Center (VSC) operates within the Academic Success Center and provides support to the Supplemental Instruction and Peer Learning Assistant programs that are offered to students at the University by the ASC. The ASC and VSC offer several employment options for undergraduate students:

  1. Supplemental Instruction Leader (SI Leader)
  2. Peer Learning Assistant (PLA)
  3. Learning Assistant (LA)

Undergraduate positions in the ASC often require students work alongside faculty to build relationships and expand academic knowledge. The ASC employs undergraduate students as Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SI Leaders), Peer Learning Assistants (PLAs), and Learning Assistants (LAs). All ASC student positions require a commitment to the ASC mission and the pursuit of excellence. Student positions come with the opportunity to work in a professional environment and to develop skills needed for the work force.

Supplemental Instruction Leader (SI Leader) Want to help your fellow students be more academically successful? SI Leaders hold group study sessions weekly for selected courses where the SI Leader helps students review and understand course content. To apply:

Peer Learning Assistant (PLA) Do your peers often come to you for help in their classes? Do you enjoy helping fellow classmates better understand course material? Then being an ASC PLA might be the job for you! ASC employs learning assistants in many different subjects. Schedules are flexible and based on student demand. The ASC accepts applications year round. As PLA positions open throughout the year (mostly in April and November), the ASC will contact applicants to set up an interview.

Learning Assistants (LA) are trained by the Vol Study Center to apply evidence-based learning strategies, facilitation techniques, and practices that support student success and well-being in challenging courses. LAs attend assigned class sessions and assist during in-class activities. LAs work closely with instructors to plan and implement active-learning approaches that promote student participation and critical thinking. LAs also reflect on their own learning and teaching development throughout the semester, building transferable communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
