Work at the ASC

The Academic Success Center (ASC) offers many opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and higher education professionals seeking experience in leadership and/or learning assistance. For more information, contact Human Resources

The Vol Study Center (VSC) operates within the Academic Success Center and provides support to the Supplemental Instruction and Peer Learning Assistant programs that are offered to students at the University by the ASC. The ASC and VSC offer several employment options for students of either undergraduate or graduate level to pursue:

  1. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)
  2. Graduate Practicum Position (GA)
  3. Academic Success Center Office Assistant
  4. VSC Desk Assistant
  5. Supplemental Instruction Leader (SI Leader)
  6. Peer Learning Assistant (PLA)
  7. Embedded Peer Learning Assistant (EPLA)

Undergraduate positions in the ASC often require students work alongside faculty to build relationships and expand academic knowledge. The ASC employs undergraduate students as Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders, Peer Learning Assistants (PLAs), Desk Assistants, and Student Workers. All ASC student positions require a commitment to the ASC mission and the pursuit of excellence. Student positions come with the opportunity to work in a professional environment and to develop skills needed for the work force.

Graduate Teaching Assistant The ASC Graduate Teaching Assistant assists with ASC programs – especially those that fall under the category of peer-led-learning: Peer Learning Assistance and Supplemental Instruction (SI) + administrative responsibilities. The job description below outlines many of the responsibilities of the GTAs within the ASC; however, this job description tends to change based on the changing needs of the peer-led-learning programs as they continue to expand and prosper!

Graduate Practicum Position Are you a graduate student looking for a practicum experience?  The ASC offers practicum positions working with all aspects of student success: PLAs/SI leaders, coaching, probation/dismissal, assessment, and more. We offer semester and yearlong positions.

Student Worker The ASC student worker assists in welcoming students, staff, and all visitors to the Academic Success Center. If you enjoy working in an office environment assisting students, consider applying. Desk Assistant (DA) The VSC Desk Assistant helps students check in for appointments with PLAs and maintains the physical Vol Study Center location. If you enjoy working in an office environment assisting students, consider applying! The VSC employs Desk Assistants year-round.

Peer Learning Assistant (PLA) Do your peers often come to you for help in their classes? Do you enjoy helping fellow classmates better understand course material? Then being an ASC PLA might be the job for you! ASC employs learning assistants in many different subjects. Schedules are flexible and based on student demand. The ASC accepts applications year round. As PLA positions open throughout the year (mostly in April and November), the ASC will contact applicants to set up an interview.

The Academic Success Center professional staff is comprised of several executive, managerial, and administrative level positions. Please see our Bios page for information on current staff. Most employment with ASC follows the academic calendar, but position start times, length of service, and pay rates vary. Qualifications and expectations will be listed with position descriptions. The ASC does not currently have open staff positions.
