Summer Sessions at another institution

If you are planning to take courses at another college or university for the summer but plan to return to UTK for fall and spring, and if you want to use VA education benefits please fill out the parent letter request form. You can drop it off in person or email it to us at

In the email please include your name, student ID, major, School attending, and course name and number at the other school. We will then send the other school a “parent letter” and they will certify you at the other school. Please allow for up to 2 weeks to process the parent letter.

Summer Sessions at UTK

See the chart below to determine full time status for each session. To be considered full time for the entire duration of the summer terms as an undergraduate student you must be enrolled in 7 hours in the full session or 4 hours in both first and second session. Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 hours for the full term session or 3 hours for both first and second sessions to be considered full time for the entire duration of the summer.

If you are enrolled in more than one summer session for any combination of hours such as 3 undergraduate hours in both first and second sessions and 3 hours in the full term session the VA will determine your full time status based on your total enrollment. Call VA at 1-888-442-4551 for information on how that will be determined. UTK does not make the calculations based on multiple terms.
